- Allows for the easy and seamless sharing of geometric (model) and meta data (document) information within a company, or with contractors, suppliers, & vendors.
- Reduces engineering overhead by eliminating duplication of effort between companies.
- Allows highly trained professionals to concentrate on engineering rather than administrating information.
- Allows access to advanced engineering technology, software, and processes not otherwise available to them.
Business Model – Doing things better
In today’s business environment companies are continuously trying to reduce product development lead times and associated costs. The trend has been to take business solutions suited for large engineering and manufacturing companies and scale them down for use in small and medium companies. These “solutions” are expensive and too complex for smaller companies.
Thinking “there had to be a better way”, the owner of E-data Solutions began to investigate how to reduce the lead time necessary to develop new products.
From that research he formed the genesis for what would eventually become the Hybrid Small Engineering Company (HSEC) Business Model. HSEC allows companies to save time and money by:
- Beginning the documentation process at an earlier stage in the development cycle.
- Re-using information obtained during the conceptual design stage.
- Reduce the amount of time needed to gather and utilize design information.
- Eliminating detail design drawings during the prototype stage.
- Reducing or eliminate the number of physical prototypes.
- Reducing the amount of time needed to generate final detail & assembly drawings.
- Reducing the amount of time needed to generate purchase orders.
- Reducing the amount of time needed to track delivery of purchase orders.
- Allowing for better visibility of non-geometric data during the design phase.
- Using lower-paid technical workers to do the non-engineering work presently being done by engineers & technologists (such as administrative tasks).
E-Data Solutions was formed to take the development of the HSEC business model to the next step – adopting these principles and tailoring solutions based on the special needs of individual consultants as well as small and mid-sized companies.
Management
Len K. Mar is a professional engineer with over 20 years experience in mechanical design and engineering information systems. Prior to receiving a bachelors degree in engineering from the University of Victoria he worked as a certified Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and Mechanical Engineering Technologist.
He has gained extensive knowledge of
information systems, computer-aided-engineering applications,
manufacturing, and engineering business processes while working
for both small and large companies. As a “hands on” engineer,
he has a solid reputation for developing and applying innovative
solutions to a broad range of engineering & business challenges.
